The Linehan Cup Golf Tournament is named after Doug Linehan Sr honoring his hard work and dedication to family & community.

Doug had a love of family and sports. He spent hours on the fields as a child playing whatever sport was in season. He excelled at baseball and football and his talent took him all over the country. At just 17 Doug signed a contract with the minor league team for the New York Mets. During this time, he met and married his wife, Geri. After baseball, he received a full scholarship to play football for Eastern Montana College and later went on to play semi-professional football for the Las Vegas Cowboys. Doug was offered a tryout for the Washington Redskins under Vince Lombardi and made the team, but unfortunately, he had a career ending knee injury.

With a young family, he moved back to Massachusetts and began a 30-year teaching and coaching career all over the Boston area. He coached various sports including football at UMass Boston, Salem State Basketball, MIT Baseball and started Beverly High School’s first lacrosse team. Doug was honored to become the head coach of Beverly High Baseball and made this his life’s work for the next 20 years. He coached and taught with many of his closest friends including Tom Donovan, Al DiPaulo, Bill Hamor and many others. Over his lifetime, many of his former student athletes became great friends who enjoyed Doug’s quick wit and kind heart.
